Music Mashup – Toto and Darude

Assignment (3.5 stars)

For this assignment, I chose to mashup the songs Africa by Toto, and Calm Before the Storm by Darude. I chose these two songs because Calm Before the Storm is a techno song with only a few lyrics, very much unlike Africa. I thought that these two songs would make for an interesting collaboration, and my character Edward Creeper is a sucker for good music, so he was a big fan of this assignment. I had to turn down the audio somewhat in Calm Before the Storm so that the lyrics in Africa could be heard, but overall, I think this assignment went pretty well, even if the finished product doesn’t sound all that listenable.

To complete this assignment, I first downloaded these two songs into Audacity using a YouTube to MP3 converter. I then edited the songs’ lengths to make them match up, and tweaked the volume of each song. I assumed that SoundCloud would take this collaboration down for copyright issues, so I just uploaded it directly to WordPress. This was an interesting assignment, and was cool to hear how these songs work together.

Reverse Audio Quiz

Assignment (3 stars)

For this assignment, we had to find a song and reverse the music, to make the song sound somewhat different, but still similarly enough that people can guess what it is based on 3 clues. Because of copyright fears, I have just uploaded the song directly to WordPress, instead of SoundCloud.

  1. This song was released in February, 2015
  2. This song peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100
  3. This song has sold over 100 million copies worldwide

The tune itself is still pretty recognizable, so I assume it is pretty easy to identify what it is.

To complete this assignment, I first found the song on Youtube, and used a Youtube-to-mp3 converter to open it in Audacity. I then used the ‘reverse’ effect under the ‘effects’ menu, and saved and exported the song. I thought that this was an effective song to use for this assignment, as even though it is reversed and sounds like gibberish, it is/was popular enough in mainstream society that it would probably still be recognizable to most people.

Roller Coaster Freaks

Assignment (4 stars)

For this assignment, we had to find different sound effects and voices to help recreate what a roller coaster sounds like. My character Edward is an adventurer, and always like to try new things, regardless of how scary they may be. You will hear him in this recording, as he is the male voice that lets out a shrill scream. No one said he was manly!

To complete this assignment, I first found several different sound effects and voices from freesounds.org, and uploaded them into Audacity. I then edited them to make the final product, and uploaded it to SoundCloud.

I thought that this assignment was effective because the noises that I added, on top of the roller coaster in the background, help make it feel like you are really there and listening to these sounds in person. It also really makes me want to ride this roller coaster!

Radio Bumper

For this assignment, we had to make a short “radio bumper”, which is audio that announces a radio station between songs.

To make this bumper, I first created a clip of myself talking about the radio station, and then found a short, creepy sounding audio clip from freesounds.org for an introduction. I also found a beat to add to the background for the duration of the bumper. Then, I edited these audio files in Audacity, before saving and uploading them to SoundCloud.

Edward’s Humble Abode

Assignment

This scene depicts what my horror character Edward hears outside of his manor every day. As you can tell, it sounds like a peaceful and relaxing place to live, but it may be a totally different story as to what lies inside.

For this assignment, we had to create a story using at least five sound effects, and no dialog. To complete this assignment, I found my sound effects on freesound.org, downloaded them and imported them into Audacity. I then edited it to get my finished product, saved it, and uploaded it to SoundCloud.

Emotions through Sound – Sadness

Assignment

For this assignment, we had to find different audio clips or sounds effects and combine them to symbolize a certain emotion.I chose sounds that I thought represented sadness.

To complete this assignment, I found four different audio clips on freesound.org, and imported them into Audacity. I then trimmed them down and positioned them  to make the finished product. Finally, I exported the file to SoundCloud.

Spooky Sounds

Assignment

For this assignment, we had to find different sound effects and combine them together to make something spooky, and have it last for at least one minute.

To do this, I first found four different sound effects on freesounds.org and added them all into audacity. I then edited them to have them fit into a one minute window, and spaced them out accordingly. I then exported the file to an MP3 format, and uploaded it to SoundCloud.
